1 Honey buzzard seen to fly out of conifer copse headed into woodland otherside of brigg rd,not great views as sun a nuisance but noticed blueish upperparts as it flew into wood,then almost certainly same bird seen on ground in middle of field 20 minutes later,stopped bike,bird flew again the sun a problem but structure/flight etc and once again grey/bluish upperparts apparent as it landed inside small conifer copse other side of kirton road (not far from car park entrance heading north)so appears to be hanging around,worth a visit friday??. also approx 8-10 common buzzards, 1 marsh harrier. approx 12 hirundines mostly house martins. Per Carol and Alans report,it makes me wonder whether the other bird in the field could have been another h Buzzard??maybe 2 hanging around?. roger. |

lets just say what everyone is thinking -- this is complete and utter tosh! --- just in case any evidence is needed all adults migrate before juveniles and are in Africa by the middle of September ; they rarely loose their way as they are experienced -- juveniles sometimes get drifted across the N Sea in suitable weather and ALL of the birds seen in the last two influxes were juveniles --- Records such as this get picked up by Birdguides and pager services and then appear in summaries and even Bird Reports and that is the reason that most reports are now not worth the paper they are printed on; even if a description is submitted and then rejected the initial report is the one which people remember not the retraction -- submitting genuine records and having them printed alongside string and rubbish is the reason that so many people no longer make the effort to send in their sightings; so be it |

There was an adult on the 26/9 in surrey!!/adult 19th rye-adult male 20/9 in durham,one in hants 20/9 one lancs adult 20/9 and adult malvern hill ive only gone back to 19th sept but no doubt more-none fit your criteria for being back in africa by mid sept-they are all incorrect and you are right???Now to mine--They were or if same bird honey buzzard,i could swear i saw grey wings and tail definitly on 2nd sighting,but if you read my article you will see i had a problem with the sun low and staring down me like a gun barrel so on reflection this could have been light playing tricks,but twice?thou sun problems twice so maybe possible,but they were still honeys!!!the structure flight etc all fitted honey,longer wings flight more elastic,cuckoo stick out head all these features carefully observed and noted-so different to common.i have seen tons and tons of common buzzards as you must know so ,Not only that ive seen honeys before around scunny,1 with d/j in broughton,that was adult male cant remember when,several other honeys during influx,one with a pal of yours on risby warren which id spotted and idied just as he was walking down the warren and enjoyed the sighting with me as it flew right over us (he was as exited as me-ask him!!),i had one juvvy at msq in the last influx,one or 2 with you at the humber bridge during the last doo+honeys at clumber/welbeck and in devon/Alan and Carol hudson had 2 possibly 3 honeys in the morning,i suppose they are wrong also!!,so come down off your high horse before trashing the records completly. |

As a matter of note, the 2 Honey Buzzards we observed were both juveniles and while it is correct that adults pass through earlier and generally autumn birds are juveniles exceptions can and do happen in birding. Albatross next to MSQ last year proves it!!! Perhaps I an offer a quote from the King James Bible, Chapter 20, Verse 29, Jesus talking to Thomas- ' Because thou hast seen me thou hast believed, blessed are they that have not seen and yet have believed' |

Alan, Your quote is only speciously apposite, if you'll forgive the phrase. Doubting Thomases can be most useful (and even essential) in possible misidentification and "stringing" situations. Regards, Freddy |
