Not as much action as further north, but a pleasant hour or so between 2 and 3.15 around the lakes. Plenty of wigeon, few pochard, loads of coots and bh gulls, with the usual little egret, cormorants and a couple of herons. A large amount of honking drew me back to the hide around 3, and a flock of 54 greylag gave their impression of lads on the lager as they sailed behind the island. I'm glad they called me back because when I came out again I got caught once more in the middle of some 15-20 long tailed tits - with a couple of blue tits hanging on. They give a fantastic acrobatic display, especially for the birding newcomer like me! Plenty of small birds calling and warning in the bushes - wish I knew what they were! Biggest problem was the clatter made by wood pigeons which flew whenever I got anywhere near - must have been 300+ all around the lake. Those wingbeats are as good as the blackbirds alarm. Don't blame them for being jittery - I passed a large number of guns being dropped off in the fields opposite the reserve as I left. |
