Good views of the bird through the 'scope from the 5 barred gate at 10.40 today (20 Nov.).
Plus 35 Fieldfares.

Regards,

Freddy Johnson (with Richard Gunn)

( Nice to meet up with fellow viewer, Roy Harvey).

Spent from 08:30 to 12:00, Friday 21st, looking from the 5 bar gate. In 3.5hrs I only had 5 brief views of the Rough-leg. Each time it came up over the trees, always brief & distant.
Also seen 2 Common Buzzards, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel & good numbers of Yellowhammers.

With Keith Robinson & Richard Jackson.

Still present today, until 10.45 at least. A couple of RAF jets screamed over and put everything up. The RLB flew from the trees on the south side of the valley ( where I had failed to see it in an hour and a half ) low across the valley to the north side where it promptly disappeared again. Reasonable but brief views at about 300m range.

There are two five barred gates over looking valleys I believe. One by the cross roads and one a quarter of a mile or so towards Oxhome. Which one do you mean please?

Chris,
The 5-bar gate from which Richard Gunn and I viewed the RLB on 20 Nov. is the one at Map Ref. TF296785 at approx ASL Point 133m on the Ordnance Survey Map 122 ( Horncastle and Skegness ).
From Scamblesby village you come to the Rowgate Hill crossroads within c 2km. Turn right and the a/m 5-bar gate is only 20-30m on your left (with ample grass verge parking.) However, there is another good viewpoint about 1.5km further down that road going S (towards the Belchford area) on the left just opposite the entry to Ing's Farm.
Good luck if you decide to go for the bird!

Regards,

Freddy

The first 5 bar gate from the Rowgate Hill crossroads only offers limited views down the Oxcombe valley. The second 5 bar gate about 1 mile to the south offers better views and would appear to offer the best chance of connecting with this bird according to a local birder I was talking to.

This bird also appears to spend long periods of time sat in trees so be prepared to sit it out!

Still present at approx 3.30pm this afternoon when showed well in flight from the second 5 bar gate. Note that a scope is pretty much essential.

Regards

Grahame

Hugh,
It was reported on Tuesday but no news since.
My guess is that the bird is probably still there but not many
people go to look for it.
