A Little Egret was a real surprise today, flushed from a roadside ditch just outside the village. A Kingfisher flew along the same ditch 10 minutes later. A pair of Bullfinches also new for me since I started watching the local area more intensively last month.
Yesterday I flushed a Woodcock from a roadside field and a Buzzard flew over me as I returned to the estate where I live!
And on a non-birding note, also surprised to see a local supermarket offering "5p off petrol and deisel" (?) - odd, as they don't actually sell the fuels!

Robert,
Woodhall Spa as well as being an attractive area sounds like a good birding one, too........ Little Egret, Kingfisher, Bullfinch, Woodcock and Buzzard are not exactly 'run-of-the-mill birds'; and of course Kirkby Moor and Kirkby-on-Bain Pits are close by with their specialities.
On a non-birding note, it sounds as if your local supermarket is offering the original "lost" leaders.

Freddy

Nothing too exciting today - except the Barn Owl which flew over my head!
Green Sandpiper also.

Hello Robert,

Good records. I take it the waterbirds were in or near 'The Sewer', the stream than runs under Tattershall Road and Abbey Lane. You may be interested to know that I recorded green gandpiper there on 3rd Dec. and also two there in Nov. 2007.

Bullfinches are widespread but not numerous in Woodhall area. The Golf Course and Roughton Moor Wood are almost dead certs., for hearing if not seeing.

Worth looking out for lesser spotted woodpecker too. I had one on the Golf Course in March.

Recent interesting sightings were 2 tree sparrows with the flock of house sparrows in the hedge on Abbey Lane opposite Abbey Farm on 3rd Dec. and a merlin hunting over the gardens on Witham Road on 16th Dec.

One of the local farmers told me he had seen a peregrine north east of the village while shooting on 13th Dec.

Woodhall is good for unexpected birds. I look forward to hearing about more from you that I've missed.

Regards,

John Watt
