Great afternoon, Russell. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction for some of the birds!
PS. My feet have now thawed out. :-D

Bardney bird appears to have a larger nail to the bill.

I must get some new glasses!

The nail does appear larger Andy, well spotted.

Hi

Looking at the photos on the album, the only difference appears to be the slighlty larger area of black around the nail. Other features of the face pattern, such as distribution of small white flecks etc, seem to be identical between the two birds. Could a long-tailed duck develop this amount of black on the bill in this short amount of time?

It could be that the larger amount of Nail visible is caused by a trick of the light, or the angle of the shot, it was a dull day when the Bardney pictures were taken.

Also the colour/pattern variation between long-tailed Ducks is huge and to get a very near match as in these birds is quite a good argument in favour of it being the same bird.

I have put another picture in the Discussion album highlighting the similarities.

One of my photos of the Covenham bird from a different angle shows more nail and another photo of the Bardney bird again from a different angle shows less nail.

Food for thought?
