Dean Nicholson re-found the recent Girton Pits (Nott’s) drake Ferruginous Duck at lunchtime today on the Whisby Settlement Lagoons which are also known as Eagle Lane Pits. To get there, from the A46 go past the entrance to Whisby Nature Reserve on Moor Lane and at the crossroads head straight over onto Eagle Lane. After the houses on the right look for the lagoons on the right hand side and the bird is on the eastern most lagoon. Please park sensibly off the road (there is room for a few cars on the left) and view only from the shelterbelt between the road and the lagoons. Please do not enter the lagoons as they are part of the working quarry and tight health and safety issues are in play. In any case all you will do is flush all of the birds. Please do not block the entrance track to the lagoons (further down Eagle Lane) even if the gate is locked as access is required at all times. Showed well till dusk, so with luck may still be there tomorrow. Regards Grahame |

I saw it at about 11-30, but got a call from Andy at 12-30 saying it had been seen flying off. Yellow legged gull on Thorpe lake. Seems to be limping.Cheers. Rick |

Unfortunately the Ferruginous Duck did fly off around lunchtime, and spent the afternoon on a private pit with no public access (and none will be granted before anyone asks) and not visable from any public footpaths/roads etc. The point is the bird is still in the area and my feeling is that it will end up back on on the Whisby Settlement Lagoons so it is still worth looking for. This bird is irritatingly close to Whisby (about 500 yards to Thorpe Lake!) where viewing conditions would be easier but with most of our lakes frozen over we need a thaw to entice any wildfowl back into the Reserve.
