Post subject: | Good start to 2012 |
It has already been a record year for Yellowhammers at our farmland site just south of Bourne with well over 350 caught so far in 2012. In addition we have caught over 250 Reed Buntings. Both these species are target farmland birds. As in recent years Yellowhammers caught comprise 55% males and around 60% juvenile birds. However whilst Reed Buntings in previous years have also averaged 56% male and 62% juveniles, this year there has been a much higher proportion of males (71%) and fewer juveniles (53%). It may be that our Reed Buntings contain more passage birds and if so perhaps males and adults move through earlier and we may get more females and juveniles in the coming weeks. What a difference a year makes.........last winter we ringed more Brambling than any other species at this site, and we've not even seen one there this winter. Alan |
