The mild winter and spring coupled with a peak vole and field mouse year has enabled Barn Owls to bounce back from last years poor year. Bob Sheppard and I have now finished checking our nestboxes for first broods and have now ringed over 1,000 Barn Owls in 2014. Many are already on second broods and we expect around 50% of pairs to double brood this year. Other birds have done well with 450 Kestrel chicks, 188 Little Owl and 130 Tawny Owl chicks also ringed. One would definitely not want to be a vole in Lincolnshire this year"!

Firstly, well done on a remarkable achievement. The time and effort spent to monitor so many breeding raptors is incredible and testimony to the dedication of yourself and Bob. What non-ringers may not know is that you have to purchase the rings you use from the BTO and I've worked out that it has cost well in excess of £1,000 for rings alone. Now you've only got the second broods to go at!!
