Today I caught, amongst other species, nine Goldfinches at a garden feeding site at Kirmond le Mire. One was an adult male with a wing length of 84mm - 4mm longer than any I have ever ringed before (300+). Svensson's "Guide to European Passerines" states the maximum for British birds is 82mm with northern European sub-species going up to 86mm. I was wondering if there is anyone on the Forum has any evidence of "bigger" northern European Goldfinces occurring here in winter in the same manner as Chaffinches, Northern Bullfinches etc.? |

Stuart - We also caught a Goldfinch (male) with a wing of 84 today [I note that the BTO's IPMR computer ringing programme queries Goldfinches with wings this long] and a female with one of 81. These are presumably northern birds and show brighter colours on the head with pure white areas. We also caugh several Chaffinches with wing lengths over 90mm, and one retrap Chaffinch was 4 days short of 10 years old! Alan |
