A friend picked up a ring, looks to be off wing 1585 - uk 144080 ? |

Hi Dean, I don't know what size of ring you refer to, or whether its metal/plastic closed/split or colour etc. This ring does not look like it's from a wild bird. All scientific bird ringing schemes have an address for finders to report them to. The British Trust for Ornithology which administer the British ringing scheme use either their address or the Natural History Museum's address in London (or to keep up with the times - even a website address is added on some larger rings). DEFRA used to use plastic cable ties with the letters UK and a five digit number for marking birds on Schedule 4 (birds which needed to be registered if kept in captivity) and these would have 'DOE - UK12345' for example on them. I suspect that this ring will be untraceable - and may not have come off a bird - a friend of mine once reported a 'rabbit ring' ! Alan |

Could it be an ear tag from a sheep? The Uk prefix followed by the number would relate to the flock number. Cheers Kev |
