Post subject:  Finches and Buntings

Have others noted a distinct lack of finches this winter. Several ringing sessions over the past week at baited farmland sites have produced very few finches. Nearly all of the few Chaffinches caught have been adults suggesting that 2008 was a poor breeding year.

However a a couple of nets in a patch of kale for pheasant cover did produce nearly 100 birds - mainly buntings - mostly Reed Buntings, and smaller numbers of Yellowhammers as well as Corn Bunting and Linnets.
