One Water Shrew crossed the track at my feet today. Very fluffed up and moving sedately. Would it be normal to see one at this time of the year or do they hibernate?

I have since done a little background reading on this shrew to discover, to my surprise, that this is the only mammal with venomous saliva which can help subdue it's sometimes large prey. Although it is of no danger to humans it can lead to considerable irritation and soreness if bitten. Also it does not hibernate but hunts throughout the winter.
