Post subject:  Otter - Bourne 24/10/2011

Sadly, a female Otter was picked up at Bourne on 24th October and has been sent off for analysis. The analysis logs the age and sex of each animal (which in itself is useful - as the average age is decreasing which shows further indication of the welcome increase in this rare species) The analysis checks for levels of Mercury (a problem with marine otters especially around Shetland) and PCB's which are accumulated from their fish diet.

There has been an increase in sightings of Otters in Lincolnshire and several records recently from new areas - welcome news indeed.
The other good news about Otters is that, being larger they tend to displace Mink which can have a devastating effect on aquatic and ground-nesting birdlife.

Chris Manning has kindly advised us that Dead Otters should be reported to the Environment Agency via 0800-807060 as soon as possible, so that EA staff can collect them to go off to Cardiff University for the post mortem.
