While at Crowle yesterday,Dave Wright and myself had a clearwing moth sp. which we did'nt get conclusive views of due to the wind blowing it off the vegetation it was settled on,but have since looked in the Moths of Great Britain by Lewington et al,and have come to the tentative conclusion that it was probably a Large red-belted Clearwing,as there was a distinct red band across the abdomen,and going by the species habitat requirements thought this species probably fitted the i.d. best.
If anyone has any sightings of the species at Crowle,or any comments on our i.d. i would be very gratefull,if only it had been a still day,we would have had the photographic evidence.

Your Clearwing could have been Red-belted as Large Red-belted is on the wing from May to Mid June. Red-belted can also use Crab Apple as its larval plant and is on the wing now. If you can give me a precise location I can have a go in enticing one to a pheromone lure.
