Did you get any photos? Privets tend to be earlier in year but Convolvulus hawk quite similar and they occur at this time of year.

There is one in the photo album now. My dad did mention that this is very late in the year for these moths normally out June and July.

Just looked at picture and as suspected a convolvulus hawk. A great find of a very uncommon migrant moth in Lincs. Never seen one in over 10 years of mothing in Britain.
