Little Scrubs this afternoon. About 15 marbled white and a few gatekeepers, meadow browns and ringlets, but at least 2 which looked to me like scotch argus. Could this be the latest generous donation to this very fortunate site? Cheers. Rick

Thanks for the confirmation Dean. Is this unsanctioned introduction of species by individuals illegal, frowned upon or just a bit of a game? Some of the Little Scrubs butterflies are in a similar habitat to where they come from originally and they certainly attract visitors who want to see them. Information boards with pictures of marsh fritillaries on them suggest that some conservation bodies are quite happy with the situation even though I gather they are genetically of foreign origin. However, a mountain species with a tenuous hold on 1 or 2 sites in Cumbria must be entirely inappropriate whatever the rules may be. Cheers. Rick

Exactly 3 years ago to the day I saw (and photographed) a Scotch Argus at the southern end of Crowle Moor. I seem to recall hearing the species had been released there a couple of years previous. I also vaguely remember hearing a different (larger?) form of Speckled Wood was released there about 4 years previous to that. I don't know if they still survive in the area but would be interested to know if anyone has seen either there in the past few years.
