Trevor,

Sorry!.....your Kirkby-on-Bain photo of 31st August shows a faded and worn male Common Blue.......Holly Blue it ain't.

A male Holly Blue would show clear black tipped margins to the top of the upperwings, the female much broader black margins; and certainly no hint of brown anywhere even in worn and faded specimens. Further, even allowing for the light, the blue of the upperwings of Holly Blues is much deeper than in your photo even when they finally fall off their perch.

Regards

Freddy
PS...sorry to play the Blues Inspector yet again.

We all agree that nobody is perfect, Max, and we all make ID mistakes......but, for most of us, the essence of our hobby is correct ID : something we should surely encourage on our website rather than treat it flippantly as something to joke about. We can all learn from our (and other people's) mistakes so as not to repeat them.

Further, a Brown Argus photo had recently been labelled as a Small Blue and now a Common Blue as a Holly Blue........do we let these lapses in correct ID pass as of little importance and without comment?

If one is not sure of the ID of the subject of a photo, then one captions it "confirm ID, please"...... and some of us may also learn something new.

Freddy

Sounds as if I've had my hands well and truly slapped, better not make anymore jokes on the forum or I'll cop it again. Not that I'd made a joke in the first place.

Seems odd that Mr Gunby hasn't answered Freddy's question, maybe on hols or ill.

Max
