Hi guys,

my son has only a couple of species of regular breeding UK butterflies left to see including Essex Skipper, the only other being Large Blue (but that will now have to wait until next year).
I personally have only ever stumbled across Essex Skipper on a few occasions on trips to the South and East Anglia, and unfortunately never when I've been with Phil. I would like to make the effort to see ES in the next few weeks. We're from Middlesbrough, and would like some help, with detailed site info if possible without having to travel too far. I reckon that Lincolnshire would probably be the nearest we could reliably see them, possibly Gib Point, although I believe there are some around Lincoln which would be closer.

Does anyone know of any that would be closer, or have first hand knowledge of exactly where to look?

Many thanks
Martyn Sidwell

I think they're currently a fairly common species in any decent area of rough grassland habitat in the southern half of Lincs. Had one on lavendar in my garden at the weekend. Just need a close look at a stationary one to confirm ID.
Cheers
Brian

I can also confirm them as a garden species ( in the Lincoln area) having had one in the garden at Bracebridge Heath on Sat 11th and Sun 12th July - also on Lavender.

Freddy

I have found Chambers Wood as good as anywhere, insects being found all around the site, but especially Little Scrubbs meadow. Also Rimac at Saltfleetby is good for the species as well.

Steve.
