The Green Hairstreak season has started off amazingly with a record number ( since transects started in 1977 ) being recorded on this week's Butterfly Transect at Gib Point NNR. 17 were actually recorded along the transect route but they are present in quantity all over the Reserve - the majority being on Hawthorn bushes. Looking back at Green Hairstreak data over the years since 1977 they are emerging about 2-3 weeks earlier than in the 70's and for this week around 5 would normally be expected. Here's hoping that the next week of projected cold NE winds doesn't harm them too much especially as there is not alot of nectar about in their habitat yet.
For anybody wanting to see them at Gib a reliable spot is on the Hawthorn bush near the N fence in the central section of the North Car Park.

Continuing record numbers at Gib Point despite this springs arctic conditions. 27 Green Hairstreaks recorded on the Transect yesterday and it would be easy to find 100+ on the Reserve at the moment. Also first Brown Argus,Wall and Small Heath.
