The weather was perfect today (Sunday) for the Lincolnshire Branch of Butterfly Conservation to hold its Open Day at Chambers Farm Wood, Bardney.
Attendance was excellent and just over 50 adults/children set off on the Walk at 11.00. Leaders were Peter Cawdell and Derek Fox with additional help from Dave Wright and Toby Ludlow. The Walk began very well, for within 5 minutes a Purple Hairstreak had been netted and potted and passed around for all to admire.
The Walk continued (with a short break) until about 2.00pm by which time everyone had returned to the Education Centre for refreshments supervised by Audrey Spring and John Davidson. In all, a total of over 20 different species of butterfly were seen including :
White Admiral
Red Admiral
Marbled White
Brown Argus
Small Copper
Ringlet
Brimstone
Gatekeeper
and the 3 Skippers - Large, Small and Essex
plus Hummingbird Hawkmoth.
The Butterfly Garden looked superb with ranked masses of 'butterfly plants' in flower interconnected by wide paths......plus seats to sit and enjoy it all.
The previous evening/night Toby Ludlow and team had trapped large numbers of moths, and the most interesting and unusual species were on potted and labelled display in the Education Centre.
The AGM followed at 3.00pm.
It was pleasant to meet up during the day with so many BC and also LBC friends and colleagues.
