March 23rd:

First butterfly of year is a single Red Admiral seen trying to avade the paws of the cat, thankfully it did.

Here is hoping for a cracking year and maybe just maybe I may get a Gatekeeper [-o<

Congratulations, Max, on the Red Admiral record, That's the first Lincs report I've heard of this year. Other general reports have also included Peacock and Small Copper (and a Holly Blue in Notts), but so far this year I've only had - along with other people - Brimstone and Small Tortoiseshell.

Regards,

Freddy
PS. Good luck this year with that elusive Gatekeeper.....I hope you remembered to plant some Marjoram. If not, there's still time to get some small plants from a nursery or from wherever.

Hello Freddy,

If I hadn't seen the cat jumping up at it, and then I got my bins out, I would have missed it. I thought it was early seeing the Admiral. In years gone by i've had quite a few over-wintering in the shed but not seen any since it was re-slated two year back. If that is the first Lincs record and you giving me congrats' it will make up for me not being recognised as finding the RLB at Ferriby last November

Regarding the Marjoram, Colin gave me a plant and some cuttings, the cuttings didn't take but the plant did and it flowered last year. I kept it out over winter but put it under the ivy so I hope it survived, if I'll buy another.

While sat in lounge Friday PM a small butterfly flew past but was in a hurry, I got up to try and spot it but too late, it was the size of Holly Blue which is a regular in my garden.

Good Luck Freddy and Colin... looking forward to your many reports.

Regards

John

Max,
If the small butterfly you saw was blue, then you did indeed see a Holly Blue. A web contact of mine (Chris Bell - who found the 80+ flock of Waxwings at Lincoln Railway Station on 1st January) has already had a Holly Blue male in Notts. The Common Blue wont be on the wing for a month or so yet.

Good luck with the Marjoram and that elusive Gatekeeper in due course.

Regards,

Freddy

April 19th: GVW - 1
April 21st: Orange Tip - 1 on Honesty & Large White - 1.
April 22nd: GVW - 1 & S Tor'shell - 1
April 23rd: Large White - 1, S Tor'shell - 1, GV White - 2, Holly Blue - 1.
April 24th: Holly Blue - 1.
April 25th: Holly Blue - 1, GVW - 1, Small White - 1, Speckled Wood - 1.

With the garden being a mass of colour I'm a bit disappointed I haven't had more stuff in, maybe because everything seems to be blossoming far earlier than usual I'm being hard on myself.

Kind regards

John

On May 4th had a Large and GV White plus an Holly Blue. Better news yesterday was a garden tick in a male Orange Tip. =D> Then later had two female Orange Tip :) . The male was never seen to land it just kept flying up and down the back garden but the females seemed to like the Aquilega.

Things are looking up and I really think I may just get to see the Gatekeeper this year, fingers x-ed.

Regards

Max

Red Admiral - 1
GV White - 1

John

PS: I know there are not many about but it seems odd that this year very few of us are putting our sightings on this section WHY? Could it be that those who have put their sightings on in the past such as Steve R are putting them on their blogs instead? I for one miss seeing their reports.
