Andy,

It is perfectly normal behaviour. Any bright, sunny and warmer period can bring a Peacock, Red Admiral or Small Tortoiseshell out of its winter hibernation torpor. It will occasionally find some autumn/winter flowers for a nectar top-up before returning to the protection of a garage, shed, ivy-covered wall, hollow tree, eaves, etc., to continue its hibernation. Many of the butterflies' attempts at resuming hibernation are thwarted by well-meaning but misguided homeowners who 'rescue' them and release them outside.
