Saw a fritillary at chambers wood today it was very fast moving gliding and flapping. Would not let me get any where near it.
About the size of a painted lady... Could it be a SWF???
Anybody else spotted any of these. Also lots of White Admirals courting.

Welcome to the the Forum Lance!

Could it be Marsh Fritillary?

See the LBC Album at http://www.lincsbirds.co.uk/album/displayimage.php?pos=-2869 for one taken by Dean Eades in Chambers earlier this year? I think he has more images on this own album at http://www.pbase.com/dean_eades/butterflies__dragonflies&page=all

Please note that I have moved this to the Butterfly Section..........

All the best

Andrew

Perhaps someone from Butterfly Conservation knows - Isn't this secies extinct in Lincolnshire or has it been given the illicit "helping hand?"

Interesting this one - myself and Mark's sighting went down rather quietly I thought! Glad someone else has got onto the DGF!

Would be interesting to find out more about the status of this species in Lincs?!

Cheers
Matt

I have a copy of latest 'state of butterflies in Britain & ireland' according to that it is in decline in east of England although there have been sitings in Lincs 2004-2005. I was also not aware that trials had been made with a view to establishing Chequered Skipper in Chambers alas concluded habitat not suitable. Excellent book I recommend to all. Can be bought from here:

This release and introduction of species seems to be a contentious issue .
people I have spoken to seem to be split with their opinions:

it is okay to introduce a species in an area which has proved previous breeding records.

it is okay to introduce any species anywhere , it does no harm and gives
people the opportunity to observe ' unusual' species in their patch.

we should not introduce anything anywhere , we should not tamper with nature.

This is an argument which could go on and on with points for and against
with different opinions. Some of the comments speak of illegal /illicit introductions , particulary at Chambers ... is this practice illegal ??
Presumably soem sort of licencing control is needed ?

I can see both points of view but it is still nice to visit Chambers and look at Frits , marbled whites and hairstreaks.

I think you've covered the various opinions on the subject, Pete. However, as Chambers Farm Wood area is part of the Limewoods National Nature Reserve I would have thought unauthorised introductions would be covered by some special legislation. Having said that, I am unable to find it - does anyone know?
