Max, The Green Hairstreak adult (the only Hairstreak around in Lincs before mid-summer), emerges in late April/early May but in Lincolnshire it is mainly confined to the coastal areas, slightly inland(as at Covenham Reservoir) and the SW. I doubt if it has ever been recorded at MSQ. However, none have been reported so far this year in Lincs. In any case, it characteristically perches on, or flits around, shrubs and bushes not tree-tops. Holly Blues can sometimes gain height (you reported 1 ) but they do appear blue, of course. Speckled Woods (you reported 4) often fly around at tree-top level but are much larger than Hairstreaks. However, your 'possible Hairstreak' may have been one of these two species moving quickly against the light........or else a day-flying moth? Regards, Freddy |

Max, Talk of the Green Hairstreak and it appears ....... but at Gib Point (see Ed Mackrill's post of 21 April!) So, if you can visit Gib Point 'ere long, you could well manage to see your first ever Hairstreak. It's a super butterfly and is the only British butterfly to have wings that are truly green. The Orange Tip has olive mottling on its undersides but that is only a composite blend of yellow and black scales, not by any green colouring of itself. Their numbers normally reach a peak from mid-May to mid-June. Regards, Freddy |
