We went to the area this morning to look for a kite that had been seen briefly by Andy and 1 or 2 others over the last 2 few days in poor weather. It was found flying over Bloxholm Lane and landed on a pylon where the total absence of red anywhere on its back and upper tail was obvious. When it flew the notch on its tail , clear while sitting, became less obvious .The pale head slowly changes to grey down its back and it has 2 pale shoulder patches. We decided it is a black kite. Seen 4 or 5 times over a period of 2 hours. Last seen north of Ram farm flying around. Lots of high hedges in the area makes it hard to keep it in view for long. I suggest parking on a concreted area about half a mile south of Ram farm and look over the trees to the north. Needless to say after I dropped him off Andy went back on his bike to try for it on his green list. Good luck. Rick

Page 63 Forsman look at the tail shape of the Red Kite plate 48 and 50, they dont all show forks??
Has it dropped a Primary or is it only showing 5 fingers.

reports claiming it is a juvenile... doesnt look anything like a juvenile from Russell's pics? For starters look how worn the feathers are.

Reported bird watched c7.30-8.00pm this evening(Mon) with 6-8 other Lincs birders. Some confusion arose within the group as to the firm identity of the bird-? Black Kite (juvenile?)/Red Kite (juvenile?). Firm confirmation, if possible, would be appreciated in due course.

With regards to the identity of this kite. I identified it as an adult Black Kite after finally getting reasonable views of it early yesterday afternoon, almost 2 hours after I had first seen it. It was never close but the light was good and colours could be seen well.

I do not feel that it is a juvenile, as some people are saying, due to the amount of feather wear.

The tail shows a shallow notch, not deep as a Red Kite, when the bird is perched but this is lost when the tail is spread, as shown in Russell's photo.

The bird does not show any hint of red on the upperparts, not even in the tail which is grey-brown, the same colour as the mantle. As far as I am aware all Red Kites, juvs and adults, have a red upper tail. The only reddish tones on the bird are on the lower belly which I understand that Black Kites can show. The bird did not show the prominant white windows on the underside of the primaries which Red Kites have.

Looking at the photos it looks very like the bird GPC had earlier this year.

I look forward to further comments and hope that it is seen well today.

I was one of the birders who saw the Kite last night and confusion arose because of the good views obtained. The Kite did show rufous underparts but in flight only showed a shallow fork and no red on the tail. After going on the net and looking at the literature available I found numerous photographs to identify the Kite as Black. As Andy states I may be wrong.

I have had phone calls from several Lincs birders this morning, including GPC, to say that the bird is still present and is as I said an adult Black Kite.

I have just noticed on "Birdguides" that the Black Kite showed again today at Nocton Heath at 1615 after its flying visit to Beckingham, nr. Newark.

The only timings I have are from ""Birdguides" :
10.05 -Nocton Heath
11.15 -Nocton Heath
12.15 -Beckingham
16.15 -Nocton Heath.
Do you have additional timings?

NB The heading timings on our website seem to be jumping back and forward by 3 hours.
