I got sodding wet and dreary! walked around in murk and rain all day and managed to see 78 species on my local patch at Barton including the Long-tailed Duck and Smew but failed to get a peep out of any of the 3 Cetti's and the tides were wrong (no Turnstone, no Knot no Black-tails) and there was no light and the Little Owl was in its hole, the Kestrel had drowned etc etc-----------

I know this will seem blindingly obvious but I think they saw those totals by going out with their bins and plodding round their local patches. That's how I do it.

Congrats. John first moronic comment of the year. I would have thought better of you than that.

Apologies for the strength of my comment John but i just see your original comment as part of the arrogance shown by some on here towards the inexperienced.

Went to Rutland Water. Couldn't see the reservoir never mind birds with the fog!
Somehow managed 34 species the highlights been a treecreeper at Normanton carpark and 4 Egyptian geese with greylags on pasture on the peninsular.

Took my wife out for a meal there so should have amassed enough brownie points for when the next twitchable bird is about

Happy new year to you all

Although I am answering GPC's quote, my reply is aimed at others who are complaining about the weather...

Be thankful you are well enough to go out and enjoy your hobby/profession, there are those who are not [I am not including myself] and would give anything just to get out. For the most, all of you have tens of years of enjoying your hobby but as soon as we get inclement weather you start complaining. In summer when it's hot and sticky I expect some of you will be complaining again.

As Russ said we British are renowned for complaining about the weather, but it still sticks in my craw everytime I read it on here. Especially when I'm not in a good mood.

If the Cetti's had any sense they would have gone south for their Xmas break.

The Little Owl had the best idea.

And as regards the Kestrel, I feel like doing the same after reading GPC's post

If we get the predicted snow, at least it will allow us to have a bit of fun, unless of course we have to drive through it.

Give me something to smile about :!:

Maximillian

I would love to get out in gale-force winds to see what rare species get blown onto the shoreline, but unfortunately I have to endure the fairweather dude-ocracy of the parents every day......

Katherine

If you can forgive my 'moronic' comment above - though I thought I was simply stating the obvious - there must be birds around your home. I only managed 50 on New Year's Day but they were all within a couple of miles of my home. What's within that radius where you live?

John

I'll try to get out this weekend and see what comes up - right now, Big Cat Diary's on, and I must go and swoon at Simon King!

Don't be so sensitive James. John made a totally valid point. The birds are there to be found, like it or not!!

I reckon 85 species would have been possible if the weather was not so windy and cold, missed stuff like Redshank, Little Grebe etc, as I said.

It's a good job i didn't make a NY Resolution to be more tolerant, as it would have long gone.

I agree that the term i used was too strong, crass would probably have been better, but i wasn't able to edit in time.

We all know that Katherine is limited with her opportunities to get out birding and I suspect most wouldn't get a great score walking round Boston. I don't think I have reached 20 species yet and I live next to CCP and 2 minutes from Meggies seafront.

Anyway Happy New Year to all, including John.

it also depends on the quality of your patch - I'm lucky I've got a large working gravel pit a mile from the door....
