Ring-necked Parakeet

One seen this morning in N Lincs exhibiting some interesting behaviour. Sorry about the spelling error.

On a slightly more serious note does anyone have any idea about the origin of the R-n Parakeets that are seen in this county? Escapes? Expansion from W London and other sites?

I guess, if Ring-necked, they are just likely to be birds wandering around from colonies in London and the SE...

I would imagine the Ring-necks are much more likely to be local escapes than from the feral population. No real way of knowing either way, but that would be my guess.

There is also an Alexandrine Parrakeet in the Boston area. I now have both on my garden list! Most parrots can survive for years in Britain in the wild. Don't forget that many of the species we see at large in Britain actually originate from a much harsher envrionment than here.

There was a cockatoo for over 20 years in south staffs that hung out with a load of rooks.

A friend e-mailed me about crowds of birders at Legbourne and asked me what was going on. I sent her a link to the album so that she could see the egret. She saw my pics of the R-n P and wrote:

Just looked at the photos. We had a ring necked Parakeet in our aviary until 2 weeks ago, when we took it and its budgie friend to the Parrot sanctuary. They have lots of the Parakeets flying wild outside the aviary and they're probably going to let ours out too. She fell at Rogers feet a couple of years ago when he was working in Kenwood in London. She was injured so he brought her home. Beautiful bird.

The sanctuary is at Friskney - see link below. So there's the source of all the Parakeets in the South of the county unlike the genuine wild bird recently seen in Grimsby!
