The Lincolnshire Bird Club

We have placed a photo in the Discussion Birds section of a possible Water Pipit seen today on the Humber Bank. We observed it flying in off the Humber and first thoughts were Meadow Pipit or Rock Pipit but on closer inspection seemed to point to Water Pipit?? It obligingly came to land on the shoreline and proceeded to forage amongst the vegetation and pebbles. Any help or comments would be very much appreciated to confirm ID

Have you considered littoralis Rock Pipit?

I understand there was a good number on the humber bank at the beginning of March? If you look on GPC blog there are some really good image of one very bright bird? (Not that your picture isn't good....its just I would like to see more of this bird to be sure.)

Meadow Pipit

Hi Mandy

Looks like you were thrown by the unusual buff colour to this birds underparts. However, this is shown quite strongly by a minority of Meadow Pipits, and is not a feature of Water Pipit.

Some Meadow Pipits can even show reddish throats, and they can be really confusing!

Paul, thanks for taking time to provide extra info, we were thrown by the bird, when we have seen Meadow Pipits before they have been more heavily streaked and without a distinctive eye stripe, also we have mostly seen them in open fields or on fences whereas this one was actively foraging about in the mud and rocks which made us question the identity of it. Well now we know! Thanks again
