Walked over to Boultham mere this afternoon and had an interesting series of Sandwich Tern sightings:-
13:25 1 Sandwich Tern present when I arrived, on posts in front of hide.
13:37 2nd Sandwich Tern flew in to posts in front of hide.
14:01 Both Sandwich Terns flew off, high to NE.
14:16 2 Sandwich Terns flew in and landed on posts after circling mere.
15:01 Osprey flew in, caught a fish at first attempt and flew off to NW. All gulls and terns flew up when Osprey appeared and the terns disappeared.
15:20 1 Sandwich tern flew in and landed on island where Black-headed Gulls chased it off and it went on to posts where it was still resting when I left at 15:40
I have no way of knowing if these records involved 2, 4 or 5 birds but I feel that they were probably 5 birds passing over and dropping in to rest. Two birds bathed just after they arrived, 1 of each pair.
Also seen 10 Cormorants, 8 Shoveler, 2 Ruddy Duck, 1 Cuckoo & 1 Yellow Wagtail,
