A visit to North Yorks today produced an excellant day's birding and Insect watching, the following where seen:
Fen Bog YWTR. 1 Male Whinchat, plus breeding Curlew and Snipe. Insect highlights here were,3 Small-pearl bordered Fritillary,1 male Large Heath(of the race Polydama),and an unbelievable non-insect sighting of a swimming female Adder, which had managed to rob a nestling Chaffinch from it's nest, and fell into the adjacent beck,i then went in and fished the snake out with a stick, and put it to rest on a rock, while we photographed it(Well done Mr Atkin for spotting this).
Troutsdale/Wykeham Forest 3 Honey Buzzard(including 2 displaying males, what an incredible sight, they looked like a giant Nightjar, with it's wings above it's head) 2 female Goshawk(1 being mobbed by a female Sparrowhawk) 6 Common Buzzard 26 Common Crossbill The only insect highlight here was our first Yorkshire Beautiful Demoiselle
What a cracking day!!
Regards
Steve, with Chris Atkin and Dave Wright.
