One of our B-l Helleborines has flowered at Whisby and although I am not 100% certain could of the variety viridiflora which lacks anthocyanins so therefore lacks any trace of red or purple. According to Harrap this variety is rare.

I was going to go back tonight and photograph the plant but got sidetracked with the Caspian Tern just down the road at Collingham!! (thanks to Dean Nicholson for the phone call!) I'll have another go tomorrow.

In the meantime does anyone have any additional info on this form other than what is published in Harrap and is somewhat brief. Exactly what combination of features would make this v. viridiflora rather than just a pallid plant. I would certainly welcome a second opinion on this plant.

At the risk of sounding a little extreme I'm not going to publish the whereabouts of this orchid on a public forum. Rather sadly I have heard that both Military Orchids in Bucks and Lizard Orchids near Bristol have been dug up this year. If this is v. viridiflora then I dont know if this would make the plant a target for collectors or not. Details of the plants location can be obtained from me or Phil Porter at Whisby.

Regards

Grahame
