What a difference a spell of sunshine makes!
With the garden thermometer registering 25C today in Bracebridge Heath the following butterflies (8) appeared in an hour (1-2pm) :

Small Skipper (on Lavender)
Gatekeeper
Holly Blue (male)
Ringlet
Meadow Brown
Small Tortoiseshell (on Buddleia)
Green-veined White
Large White

Added Comma (13th garden species 08) and Red Admiral(14th) today in the bright sunshine.
How have other gardens been progressing in species so far this year?

Not good at all, today i sat in the garden after work at 5.30 and saw red admiral, small tortoiseshell and a few peacocks and that is the best i have seen this year, mind you i have not spent a lot of time in the garden this year due to work but its looking good, the buddleias are just starting to flower, they were pruned later this year so they could flower later. Maybe if the weather improves, today was the best so far, i should see some more.

Getting better.
12 peacocks on buddleia this evening along with 2 red admirals, 2 small tortoiseshells and 1st painted lady this year.

Isn't it odd not seen a single Peacock in garden and the Buddleahs have been in flower for a month, they normally come. Saying that hardly seen any on them except Large and Small White plus Small Tortoiseshell.

During some periods of warm sunshine from 12.30 - 1.30pm Mon 11 08 08, the following 9 species appeared, mainly on the Marjoram and Buddleia :

Common Blue male; 16th garden species 2008
Holly Blue - 3
Gatekeeper - 3
Speckled Wood (on Sunflower)
Peacock - 2
small Skipper sp
Large White
Small White
Green-veined White

During the sunny spells in the garden this morning there were :
Brown Argus (on Marjoram) - the 17th garden species 2008
Speckled Wood x 2
Common Blue - female
Holly Blue x 2 - male/female
Small Tortoiseshell x 3
Peacock
the 3 spp Whites
plus Red Admiral (28/08)
I am still waiting for the first Painted Lady.

Obviously, good numbers of butterflies are still lurking in the vegetation and just waiting for the sun so as to carry out their normal routine of feeding and mating. Brian Hedley's post today (Thursday) re Greetwell Hollow also helps to prove the point. Plus, within a few minutes of the sun making a brief appearance this afternoon, the following also appeared in my garden in Bracebridge Heath on the somewhat reduced quality of the few remaining Buddleia spikes:

Small Tortoiseshell - 11
Red Admiral - 3
Comma - 1
and several Whites
(Speckled Wood - 1 on Sunflower).
It's great to see reasonable numbers of Small Tortoiseshells on the wing again (and on the Buddleia).

I was pleased to see in the welcome sunshine this morning a Comma in the garden plus a Small Tortoiseshell on the Sedum spectabile and a Large White. Also, my wife told me that a male Brimstone was flying around the garden earlier today.
