BBC Springwatch 2009 - It's Almost Here!

Now Bill Oddie's left the show for a while, will more of you be watching this year's Springwatch? Chris Packham has taken over from Bill and New Presenter 2, Martin Hughes-Games will be encouraging us all to go on holiday.

Simon King will be looking for polecats and leatherback turtles in North Wales as well as Lincs Bird Club's favourite bird for debate, goshawks! I'm looking forward to it immensely!

I have a special affection for Springwatch, it was the 08 season that re-kindled my fondness of birdwatching last year. I visited Pensthorpe mid way through filming last year and never looked back!
Bill's off for a year (depression I believe), because Chris Packham is doing Autumnwatch 09 too.

Will reserve my opinion of the new team until I have seen the programme, but my main complaint about these series is that I enjoy looking at the wildlife but not looking at the presenters all the time.
If only they would take a leaf out of David Attenboroughs book, with him you watch the wild life all the time and just listen to his commentary.
Unless of course, I am just getting old.

Just for a change lets have all female presenters lol

While in mid-Wales recently a "little bird" told me that the film crew were about but didn't say anything in my report, didn't want to spoil it for those who didn't know.

You would have far more content if I'd had a film crew with me for the week I was at this venue, it is a fantastic place as I have already said in my report in Non Lincs section. From the clue they gave last night I'm expecting to see Redstart tonight and hopefully followed by Pied Flycatcher and Wood Warbler etc.

I'll be interested to see if a certain raptor is mentioned on the programme which was seen by me and one of the crew.

I was told the crew went on the moors I hope they show it because I spent two of my seven days there.

I would have liked Mike Dilger to have joined Kate.

Things can only get better lol

Did it not show though a rare view of a Goshawk close up that most would have never seen (in Lincolnshire - only kidding you all! :lol:

) as well as its agility through the cam net gap. The bit I liked with reference to the hawkers Goshawk was when it misjudged the gap, and adjusted itself with a "springboard" movement off a side pole. I was impressed with its flight dynamics and its instinct, therefore giving a insight to the wild side of the species?

Thoughts on the hawkers Goshawk on a postage stamp please! :lol:

I, too, was impressed with the amazing agility of the captive Goshawk - the reason for my my comment was that they featured the falconers bird before they showed the wild bird at the nest. Perhaps I have seen too many excellent wildlife documentries but the content of Springwatch is, in my opinion, more suitable for Blue Peter viewers.

It's a good entry-level programme that seems to have succeeded in getting people interested in wildlife.

What I would like to see though, is a programme that is aimed at people that have mastered the basics, know a bit about the history and the like and want to move on to more advanced wildlife watching in whatever sphere that might be.

After all, Brownies and Cubs want to go on to become Guides and Scouts!

Stuart - what about Bird Ringing tonight - Mark as ever present! For me I tend to ignore the waffle but do pick up the odd bit of interest. I see they ran that Cuckoo documentary from last year which was good.

I know what you mean about Blue Peter - never thought of it like that before until reading this tonight!
