looks like good numbers in the Netherlands in the last 2 weeks -- high pressure supposedly building from Wednesday onwards generating a SSE wind across the southern North Sea so time to check that sea clubrush -- SSE winds will also coincide with high spring tides next weekend so White-winged Blacks in abundance not to mention rare eastern waders and a fall of Scandinavian migrants -- and then I woke up

Next weekend is the start of the Gib Point BTO Ringing Course so I'll let you know what turns up in the nets! Any birders are more than welcome to come down to the Ringing Observatory to see what's happening.

Steve, you have a long memory. Just to get the facts straight, this was ringed in October 1988 by a group of North Eastern ringers who were staying at Gib. It was not on a BTO Course and attitudes have changed a great deal since then - e.g. White-throated Sparrow!!

Local forecast now shows wsw or sw winds mon to fri with showers on thurs and possibly on fri, but its only a forecast.

Yes looks like the Met Office have got it wrong again; no real surprise there -- the lack of late August easterlies seems to be the reason that we no longer get falls of scarce migrants like Red-backed Shrikes and Icterines that were much more common in the 60's and even the late 70's; changes in climatic circulation But as noted in Alex and James in Russell Slacks' new book when conditions are not conducive for falls the number of observers drops away to very few and hence anything that has arrived against the wind stands much less chance of being located (apologies for the paraphrasing)

Graham - Any comment on my thoughts of the potential for confusion between nominate Fea's Petrel (which can show show a breastband and is smaller-billed than deserta? cf earlier thread. Was this raised by anyone peer-reviewing the record? Just out of interest? Hadoram is slowly releasing information on his Zino's expedition too....
