In my copy of Ian Sinclair's Field Guide to the Birds of Southern Africa (second edition), it makes reference on page 15 to 'Roberts' Numbers. Which 'Roberts' designated numbers to bird names, and how did this 'Roberts' person decide which number to give which bird?

Austin Roberts (bn3/1/1885) was a South African Zoologist and the author of "Roberts Birds of South Africa" which is the standard works on the region. He was killed in a car crash in the Transkei region on 5th May 1948. I don't know how he designated the numbers or why. However, I found the rest out using "Google" so you could do the same to find out more, Katherine.
