Just read the latest newsletter from LWT and a piece about the turbary. Some large earthworks have been carried out as plans to restore the site to a peat bog.
LWT are giving thanks to Natural England who have funded the work through Higher Level Stewardship. Which is all well and good but I'll put money on that there are still next to no seats to sit on when visiting the site, which is one reason I stopped going. The only seating is in the two hides and other than a very rickety seat in another area of this lovely reserve the last time I visited there were none. It's about two years since I visited so maybe just maybe some kind soul will have made one or two.
Crowle Moor on the other hand at my last visit two years ago had no seating either and it is a massive reserve. I have asked other birders who are in good health if they would like some seating and they said it would come in handy.
In the past I've asked the LWT about seating at both these reserves and been fobbed off with lame excuses as to why no seating is there! I know that Crowle Moor is jointly run so it's not totally there fault.
I asked a few years ago about Epworth and it was at the time when they were felling some of the trees, there was large amounts of them stacked waiting to be taken away, I asked if a few of them could be made into simple seats, the answer came back no they couldn't. Also asked a similar question about Crowle, couldn't some of the logs from Epworth be used to make log seats at Crowle, and I couldn't believe the answer they provided, which was we cannot introduce any logs/trees to this site which does not grow there. Silver Birch grows at both sites, I've seen it, SO where was the problem?
So I'm asking again! If there are no seats/benches at these two scenic reserves why can't we have some made and surely you are only catering for the able-bodied and certainly not for the disabled. And while I'm on about Crowle the track leading to the southern part of the reserve was deeply cambered on my last visit. A member of this forum told me a few months ago that while they were travelling along the track a red light came on the dashboard saying the sump had been too close to the road, it certainly made them think twice about driving down there again, I certainly won't! If this track is in that bad condition surely something should be done about the track before someones car is seriously damaged, don't you agree!
The best reserve as far as I'm concerned in Lincs for seating is by far MSQ, seats are almost every hundred yards walking from the car park to the Duck Hide and as far as the wooden bridge just before the turn to Wader Hide. It would be advantageous to me and others if a seat was put between the bridge and the Wader Hide as it is a very long way without a rest. Sometimes I carry a folding stool but with all my other gear it just adds weight I could do without.
I'll get off my soapbox now and have a cuppa.
