I heard today that Nocton Farms have now got permission to build a 50 hectare complex for 9000 (Yes nine thousand!) indoor dairy cows. I don't know where this is to be but I just hope it is not on one of their farms on Nocton fen

Does anyone have more details?

The only determination I can find is for an agricultural building to be converted to staff accomodation and offices at Nocton Fen Farms, Wasp's Nest, Nocton Fen, LN4 2AY. NKDC Planning reference 09/0343. I can't see anything that mentions 9000 cows. I haven't yet looked at planning applications not determined but as you said they had been given permission it would probably be a waste of time.

Thanks David. I have been hearing rumours about this dairy for some time but only today found out it is Nocton Farms. Of course it might turn out that they are having it built somewhere else entirely.

I believe that two large dairy enterprises, one from Lancashire and one from Devon, have formed a partnership and have bought the Heath farms from Nocton Ltd. The proposed total herd I have heard is for 5000 cows held in feed lots of about 300 head each, which will involve a lot of new construction and, clearly, there has to be concern over potential groundwater pollution from an enterprise of this size. I would expect the animals to be fed on a mixture of maize silage and wholecrop wheat. I am doing my WeBs count on Nocton Fen this Sunday (a week early) and will try to glean further information if I can. If I have further news I will post it on the forum in view of the interest of those who watch the Nocton area. As far as I know the Fen farms, which have been farmed by Carrington Estates for the past two or three years, will not be directly affected.

Have just seen on the local Lincs news website that they have put in for planning permission for a 9,000 herd plus all other buildings, also giving details of when and where the plans may be viewed.

Details of a planning application for a new intensive dairy farm are being put on display in Nocton village next week.

A planning application for a proposed 8,000 dairy cattle herd has been submitted to North Kesteven District Council for consultation. The plans include the construction of new lifestock buildings, two milking parlours, two 'maternity' buildings, farmhouse accommodation and new vehicular access off the B1188.

The plans will be on display at a public exhibition on Thursday 18 February at Nocton Village Hall, Main Street, Nocton, between 10am - 2pm and 3pm - 8pm.

Planning officers from the District Council will be on hand to answer any questions from residents regarding details of what is being proposed.

Details of the plans are currently available to view on the Council's website, www.n-kesteven.gov.uk/planningonline and quoting planning application number 09/1040/FUL.

Apparently there is to be an article on next week's (28th March) Countryfile on BBC1 about "controversial plans for the largest dairy farm in the UK to be sited in Lincolnshire". Worth watching but will probably be only half the story.

Viva! (Vegetarian’s International Voice for Animals), which has signed up over 3,100 people to its Facebook campaign against the development, describes the plan to ‘imprison 8,100 dairy cows in dark sheds’ as ‘the equivalent of battery farming cows’...........

It amazes me how many people think the 2 applications ( 1 on Nocton Heath and 1 on Nocton Fen) are the same thing reading through the objections on the website http://eplanning.lincolnshire.gov.uk/ePlanning/loadFullDetails.do?aplId=28033

I also note that the RSPB letter refers to a "wind farm" which is not the case either.

This is of course a serious subject, but with all the number of beasts involved and with my sense of humour, a "wind" farm could be the right name,
