Observed a large pike in the Sincil Drain on Monday 07th June (10-12lb) swimming around with a fair sized roach in its mouth gripped by the wrist of its tail. The pike proceeded to shake the roach like a dog with a bone sending scales showering down to the bottom. At one point the roach escaped but was obviously stunned and the pike showed a turn of speed and grabbed it again by the middle. Interestingly, the pike seemed to deliberately swim to the far bank of the drain(cutting off one escape route for the roach/slower water?) before turning the poor fish around in its jaws and engulfing it head first. Ive read many times about this habit but never actually seen it.

Matthew.
