The Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust has just purchased a critical missing piece of Crowle Moor nature reserve. Crowle Moor, together with Hatfield and Thorne Moors over the border in Yorkshire, are what remains of the vast complex of moor, bog and fen that once surrounded the head of the Humber estuary and included much of Lincolnshire's Isle of Axholme.

Drainage and clearance for agriculture from the 17th century onwards left the present moors as 'islands' of raised peat bog. Keeping the moors wet is vital to their survival. The purchase of a seven acre field will help us do just that for a large area of Crowle Moor. The ditches around the field drain the moorland to the east. With control of the drains, we will be able to control water levels more effectively.

Control of water levels has also got a step closer at Willow Tree Fen with all the sluices and control structures now in place. The system is being tested and soon water levels in the drains can be managed to allow water to spill out creating fen conditions.
