Barn Owl 1 East of the Hobehole outfall on a large marshy margin alongside the tidal river. I do see Barn Owl at this location from time to time, but not on a cold winter afternoon sharing open marshland with about 90 Brent Geese. I mean close company it was surrounded, although no hostile posturing was in any way evident. Whilst I appreciate that small rodents are their chief food during hard weather they will take small birds sometimes at roost and even fish. I think they had mutually agreed that marine vegetation was not for Barn Owls!!!!! I am beginning to consider that an old rough sleeper bridge over the inner creek may well be a regular "station" where this bird eats its prey.
This particular bird shows the upperparts to be finely mottled and spotted with grey and white with the grey much more pronounced so that it is probably a female. Silent throughout although the Brent kept up their distinctive gutteral croaking.

Other evidence of the hard weather was the presence of 5 Little Grebe on the tidal river. Hobehole still frozen.
