Good Northern Larus argentatus argentatus then Andy - good plumage and proven provenance. Just what colour ringing is all about.

It is interesting to see where they go - I wonder why they move? Lack of food doesn't seem likely on a tip.

Also curious to know the identity of the other gull in the first photo - seems small with yellow legs.

Rob,

2nd Gull in the 1st image is an adult Common Gull.

From my experience, winter gulls move on very quickly and use different sites on different days and are not site faithful. The chances of the same colour-ringed gull being at the same site two days in a row appears to be very low.

Thanks for your reply.

I'm sure you're right about the Common Gull - it was my first thought, but the legs seem so yellow, with no hint of green, the head seems unmarked, but it can't be summer adult, and the size seems less than half the Herring. I expect it's my eyes.

And surely Gulls don't move on a daily basis - this would be a waste of energy and a risk, to move away from a certain food supply? And you could never twitch a gull on that basis, but I have! Passerines like garden birds seem to be site faithful - the same ones each day? Which groups aren't site faithful - and why not?

So many questions - I'm sorry!

I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post colour ring records on but I'll add this record of a colour ringed Herring Gull from Kirkby Tip seeing as Andy started it and he can always move the thread elsewhere. It's pertinent as it refers to movement.

Many thanks for the sighting. This bird was one of a brood of three ringed on a factory roof adjacent to the Port of Felixstowe, Suffolk. Very few of our colour-ringed Herring Gulls have been seen in Lincolnshire so this is a most welcomed report. Most of our Herring Gulls that move away from Suffolk tend to head southeast into Essex, Kent and the coastal regions of north France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
