After a lull at the beginning of February, small finch numbers have built up again in Bob Sheppard's garden on the edge of Bourne Wood, and the Common/Mealy Redpolls seem to be back with Lesser Redpolls. So far in 2011 we have ringed around 150 Lesser Redpoll and an exceptional total of around 40 Common (Mealy) Redpolls. In addition to the Norwegian-ringed Mealy Redpoll control another British-ringed control was trapped yesterday. (We know that the ring is issued to Thetford Forest Ringing Group - but date used not yet known).
Although Siskin numbers also seem to be building in Bourne Wood, they are not yet coming down to food in numbers.........50 have been ringed so far.

We now know that our Common Redpoll control was ringed on the Norfolk coast comming in to the country on 17th October 2010. A Lesser Redpoll control was originally ringed in Doncaster.
We are not likely to get details of the Norwegian-ringed Mealy Redpoll, Belgian-ringed Lesser Redpoll and Dutch-ringed Siskin for some time.

It's not that far from Bourne to Market Rasen but it's taken until today for Siskins (8) and Lesser Redpolls (6) to come to the feeders and get caught at my site near Osgodby. No sign of any Common Redpolls or any controls.
