I wonder if it will be 'pay and display'?

Will Pyes Hall still be there - and accessible?

Hi Roy,
I did write to planning, hoping that Pyes Hall hedge and trees could be saved, maybe by putting a protective bank around it to stop them from drowning and dying.
They replied saying they had considered that but when they have tried it before, salt still seeps through the bank and kills the trees. They propose to create a new tree plantation further inland on the new bank, whether this will be as good as Pyes Hall,remains to be seen.
I am still hoping that when the work is finished that the land will be given over to the RSPB to manage. We could do with a decent bird reserve in the area. The only place I tend to birdwatch locally now is Manby Flashes and that's not even a reserve,but at least it has a hide.

Sorry to go off topic, but I often see Manby Flashes mentioned in postings, but no one I've asked seems to know where it is. Could someone tell me where Manby Flashes is located please ?

Go down Church Lane at Manby, all the way to the sewerage works, park at the end, over the style into Franks Field the hide is in front of you, GR405 863

i also ask about the pyes hedgerow area and received no comment and a grimace salt seepage and a shake of the head, win some, lose some. i think we need to judge 5 or 6 years down the line but it would be very nice to keep that area if poss

As I understand it the trees around Pyes Hall itself (on the west side of the drain) and the hedge in front of them will die off pretty quickly due to salt seepage. It would in any event be a 5 mile return trip from the car park to access this area as the Environment Agency refuse to put a bridge across the new cutting to maintain the current right of way. The new right of way will follow the new bank inland of the area.

It should still be possible to walk along the dunes north of the car park to the thick band of elder and hawthorn on the east side of the outfall, some of these plants may die off due to salt but it is possible the higher ones up the dune/bank will survive. Being an optimist I'm hoping that the net effect of all this will be to concentrate migrants into a smaller area and make them easier to see/find. The lone Sycamore on top of the dune at this point, which is outside the zone of destruction, the widened entry channel will be twice as wide as the current outfall, may become a real rarity magnet.

The only downside to this optimism is that the entire area north of the new bank will not be defended from the sea in future and it may all way away in a storm at some point. Perhaps we should all start lobbying now for full access to the bushes at RAF Donna Nook in compensation.

Work starts next year so make the most of this Autumn! There will also be some hides on the new bank and one assumes some strategically placed scrapes in front of them. How good they will be is anyones guess, we will have to wait and see.

No reason why the car park should not remain free as it will be paid for by the taxpayer!

I know I am rather set in my ways but can't help feeling a bit uneasy about this development - as far as attracting migrant passerines is concerned, but I hope to be proved wrong.
I am sure that I am not alone in liking that part of Donna Nook, along with Pyes Hall, just the way it is now.

i have heard that it is most likely to be run by the lwt the same as donna nook at the moment but could be council involvement, lets hope its not the car park the council is involved in.
