Have members noticed the large difference in prices when buying bird seed, one of our buys is Sunflower Hearts and recently found the following,
A Garden Centre, 2 Kgs @ £7.99 =£4 per Kilo
Whisby N.R. 2 Kgs @ £6.50 = £3 25 per Kilo
Gib. Point N.R. 5 Kgs @£9.50 = £1.90 per Kilo
Makes you think,
Anyway, just thought I would mention it, something different,
Cheers Mike Surr

http://www.tacklepets.co.uk - Looks good for bulk Fatballs of 100 or 200.

I find Poundstretcher are always cheaper than Garden Centres etc for 50 Fatballs ..

Soz don't know the current price but its usually about 2 quid a bucket cheaper than Garden Centres reduced to clear etc..

From my view on seed I would have thought the last place to buy seed would be a garden centre! Selling plants etc they may only sell the seed etc because they have a captive audience, but I may be wrong. Last week while at Poundstretcher [Instore] at Lakeside they had reduced the buckets of 50 fat balls by a quid. I don't buy that quantity at a time so get them at the local seed merchant, paying more but I'm not bothered.

For bulk bags of black sunflower seeds, niger seed and Haith's songbird mix I get them from Scunthorpe market and the latter two are considerably cheaper than the seed merchant and even the former is a tadge cheaper, along with peanuts.

Regards

John

My one proviso with fat ball purchasing is to purchase them only if they are netless.

It has been reported that some birds esp. starlings and g-s woodpeckers have got their tongues tangled in the netting around fat balls, also when they are empty they tend to blow about the garden becoming a problem for other species, hedgehogs for example.
Netless fat balls are now widespread, especially when bought in bulk buckets.

Regards George.

I appreciate what you say but I will continue to buy packs of five fat balls with the nets on, and then take them off if I remember.

When the topic was first posted, only had in mind the sometimes large difference in prices. Also realise birders do not buy seed from Garden Centres.
If we are to encourage the younger generation to Feed The Birds, they will not know where to buy the seeds.
Adding to my original prices for Sunflower Hearts, at Top Lodge RSPB reserve shop they were selling at, 1.2 Kgs at £5.25, and for 4 Kgs £15.50.
Compared to the price at Gib. Point I am not impressed.

Michael,

I'm sure the younger generation can easily find out where to buy seed by either going on a search engine or looking on here or many other birdforums etc.
