The Lincolnshire Bird Club

I went for a walk this afternoon with my wife at Worlaby Carrs and was astonished at the power of the Forum! I spoke to people with those huge cameras from York, Derby, Ilkeston and Leeds as well as a couple of local birders.!! It was also my pleasure to meet Don Davis for the first time and see his excellent shots of weasel and buzzard on the Album this evening. If you want to enjoy your "patch", perhaps it's not a bad idea to keep things to yourself? Just out of interest I saw no short-eared owls or henharriers.

8 Short-eared owls this afternoon, appearing soon after 16.00. Also 2 common buzzards (although a rough-leg was reported earlier).

How very public spirited Mr Goy. Surely this sort of selfish attitude can only contribute to the congestion at Worlaby and is therefore somewhat self defeating. I take the view that birds are there for all to enjoy and are not the sole property of a few individuals. I am a Lincolnshire resident and a "genuine" birder and would welcome the opportunity to see the owls at Worlaby but wonder if it is worthwhile making the effort if the locals take this anti "outsider" attitude. My local patch is Kirkby on Bain and I am happy to report any unusual sightings so that others can come along and enjoy them even if it means that the usual peace and quiet is disrupted. Surely this should be the spirit adopted by club members and not one of "these are my birds and everyone else should keep away"!!!

I presume that the people who are against reporting rarities, do not themselves use the bird forum or birdguides to see what is about or decide where to spend their birding time ??? Surely that would be kind of hypocritical ?? Birds/wildlife do not belong to anybody but should be there to be enjoyed by everyone. That said, private property and most importantly the welfare of the animal must be totally respected. I have been lucky enough to visit this site twice this week, both times I saw no tresspassing or bad behaviour, just like minded people enjoying good wildlife. Surely if people are going to be so possesive over a 'rarity' then good forums like this, Birdguides etc may as well shut up shop now.

Would I report a rarity ? Not on your nelly !!! I'd be too afraid of gettng it wrong and having people travel from Scilly just to see a house sparrow or common short-eared owl !!

Enjoy what we do and remember why we do it !

I am a "yellowbelly" born and bred and very proud of it but not sure what that has to do with what I said about the SEO's. I am also as you call it a "genuine" birder and also write about the subject.

Nice one Max, always enjoy a bit of banter That said, mine was not directed at yourself or any individual, more aimed at the general tone of the thread.

While it still puts a smile on our face, we'll carry on doing it.

Just for the record myself and the small group I was with on Friday evening counted at least 11 SEOs.

I can't understand why people post items which are apparently designed to annoy others and then when they do cause annoyance they claim they were just a wind up. I am getting the impression that it is best to ignore everything posted to the forum in case it is just another wind up and doesn't exist in reality.

I have a sense of humour as good as any but I can only go on what I read (I ignore emoticons which are too small to easily read and interpret) and I can't be expected to understand the sense of humour of the very many that I have not met.

The reason that I mentioned Lincolnshire was that it appeared that the writer was opposed to anyone else visiting his area even if they belonged to the same club and county.

By the way the other SEO sites which "we all know about" are actually unknown to me and many other members and maybe a detailed list would be useful to a lot of us and would releive the pressure on Worlaby!

I've just read your reply twice. We have never met as far as I know but many members on here and other forums have met me and for the biggest part they know I am a wind-up merchant LOL
but I can also be taken seriously when it comes to wildlife.

I sometimes find that being serious on here all the time gets boring so I sometimes decide to wind people up, I actually keep a little black book in my head of those who easily "bite" and when the mood takes me I have a laugh and others laugh with me, but on odd occasions some don't!

I don't care who visits Worlaby it doesn't belong to me, although I visit as often as I can it isn't on my local patch. I tend not to like crowds!

Next time I visit one of the areas on my local patch and see any SEO I will post it on here like I always do.
