Aug 19th: Speckled Wood - 1 on potentilla
Aug 20th: Peacock - 1 on path
Aug 21st: Small White - 2 on tomato plant.

Early part of Sept had a single Comma and on the 28/9th had a single Red Admiral.

Oct 15th:

Red Admiral - 1 on the garage door.

PS. Good luck this year with that elusive Gatekeeper.....I hope you remembered to plant some Marjoram. If not, there's still time to get some small plants from a nursery or from wherever.

Not sure if I already said but didn't get a Gatekeeper this year, but at least I had them while visiting sites. But for me it's been very poor for the elusive butterflies. This year I'd even pruned half the buddleahs early and the other half later. And yes the marjoram flowered well but never got a niff of a b'fly. Always next year

Max,
I was fortunate to have the Gatekeeper appearing on/off in the garden from 14 July until the end of August.....mainly on Marjoram but also on Sunflowers.

I am sure that they tended to visit my garden from the hedges of the fields which back on to my house, and I think there must have been a 'regular' colony or two breeding in the nearby hedgerows. The females lay their eggs at the base of shrubs in the hedgerows with various grasses below - the tender grassblades being the food of the caterpillar. Being a 'fussy' gardener all my shrubs have bare earth or specialist plants below.

I know that it is not so common for the Gatekeeper to appear in town gardens situated well away from country hedgerows....but the odd one might well buck the rule. So, Max, Good Luck for next summer and look after the Marjoram.

For the first time I had at least a dozen sunflowers come up and provided a lovely display courtesy of the seeds dropping from the feeders. But never saw owt on them, not to say nothing did. Glad you said look after the marjoram I've left it out, so better dig it up and pot it till Spring etc.
