Tis the season of goodwill,I was crossing over fields on way to Boutham mere
today. There was a guy 150yds behind me with a white bull mastiff type dog, of
which he had no control over. The young but powerfull dog came jumping up me
several times, I stopped in field corner so I could go opposite way to them,it
came leaping at me again, and when I said to the guy, can't you put it on a lead
he came rushing at me very loud and agitated.
Thought if I uttered another word he might take a pop at me.
One to avoid.
Christmas greetings
Pete

The dog probably saw you as a meal Pete
I also think if there are reports of waxwings at MacDonalds then Freddie Johnson is about to develop a taste for a Big Mac

Before this gets removed to the "Chat Section", I will be running a course in the New Year for birders entitled - "How to get on with land owners, Fast food outlet managers and people with animals which fall under the auspices of the Dangerous Dogs Act." Any takers?
Merry Christmas

As we are about to be teletransported to the "Bird Chat" section, here goes anyway.....but these are pertinent points to this thread.

a. Pete
Re aggressive dogs......I NEVER go birding 'out of town' without my trusty (battery operated) Dog Dazer.....about the size of a 'thick' mobile. Both Richard Gunn and I have had Dog Dazers for years now and they have certainly been proved most effective when being menaced by dogs. I would add that they are indispensable when birding abroad in countries where rabies is endemic (eg.Spain). Details are on the web.....just google "Dog Dazer". ( not so sure they would be of much use against an aggressive McDonald's Manager, though, Dean.)

b. Chris
Re the Lincoln Waxwing.....Had I not been chomping on Roast Turkey, etc. with my wife, Inga, this afternoon at a Hotel not more than a mile away as the Waxwing flies, I would have made it in time in good light to McDonald's, seen the Waxwing and, who knows, celebrated with a Big Mac. Let's hope the bird stays around another day. :D

The McDonald's manager's not a very enterprising chap is he otherwise he would realise that the place would be filled with cold hungry birders

Christmas greetings Pete

Hi Pete.
Sorry about getting on my soap box but its time something was about uncaring dog walkers. We can and do joke about these sort of incidents but its too late and not so funny when the dog has ripped child face off. I know of a family that has had that misfortune.

Of course it's the irresponsible dog owners that are at fault but if we stand by and do nothing and just laugh it off, we must ultimately share some of the blame as the problems get ever worse, not better.

While warden of the IVNR in Notts. I have reported lots of dog owners to either the council dog warden or the police, with varying results.
The local authorities NEVER! have time, or don't have the finances to do anything. Several mainstream wildlife organizations I know, just do not! want to get involved either. As they fear it may upset their public.
The only exception to the above has been the Humberside RSPB. Who instantly replied to my concerns about an of Tetney marshes and have been very pro-active with newspaper articles and visits to speak to the public. =D>

Despite the general lack of enthusiasm for doing the right thing. I continue to report every dog owner with their dog out of control to the authorities.
Either with a description of the person, date, time and or the vehicle Reg. if I get the chance. They do eventually get the message I promise. [-o<
I also keep my MP well informed and have asked for his help to rid public places of out of control animals. (Bring back the licence fee and legislation to control dogs).

One letter from your MP to the chief of police or local authority, will make a difference, I promise. So please do take the time to either call your dog warden, policeman and please email your MP.

It may just prevent that next birder or kid from being terrorized.

Wishing you all a very merry christmas.

Derick,
Fairly emotive stuff!! The Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 deals with specific breeds, but I suggest you quote Section 2 of the Dogs Act, 1871 to the police in future as it deals with dogs not being under proper control etc. It is still on the statute book and with suitable evidence they should be able to bring the owner(s) before a court in appropriate cases to either issue a control order or, in serious cases, order destruction of the offending dog.

It's not usually the police that are less than keen to act in these circumstance. I find it's more likely to be the "Wildlife organization" that does not want to upset their punters. To hell with the wildlife on the reserve though! [-X

Thanks for that piece of info. from the 'Dogs Act' Stuart. It will come in very useful the next time i meet the next irresponsible owner. I cant wait! =P~

All the best.
