Geoff Mullett posted on this site that the Peregrines were seen in Louth on 2nd Dec. As far as I know there have been no subsequent sightings so until there is some activity this discussion is redundant. Furthermore, I am in regular communication with Bob Sheppard and the church warden about this matter and as far as I can see there is no need for any additional input.

John

I agree with you John. Too much pressure from people who are not fully acquainted with the facts may well have an adverse effect. Leave it to Bob with his proven track record.

From memory, the church charge £2 to climb the tower and it is open from April to about a week before Christmas. Of course, the tower usage is weather-dependent.

The new rector has yet to be appointed and I have heard that one of the other Team Vicars (who has spoken out loudly against encouraging the pegs) is due to be transferred to another parish, though I have had no confirmation of this.

As I've said before, nesting pegs on St.James would bring in a revenue that far outweighs the loss due to tower closure, as the Grantham example shows. Hopefully, there can be dialog with the new rector when he/she is installed.

My low-key post of 5th January regarding a possible Louth Peregrine update has prompted 4 follow-up posts to date :

(John Lusby) - with positive and helpful comments.."will make enquiries (at LWT Horncastle)" "will report back soon".

(John Clarkson) - with both barrels firing.."discussion is redundant" "no need for any additional input"....= clear off !

(Stuart Britton) - with supporting artillery.. "people not fully acquainted with the facts" "adverse effect".... = clear off !

(Geoff Mullett) - the sort of informative and genial answer I'm sure members were hoping for.

As John Lusby clearly intends/ now 'intended' ? to call in at the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust HQ in Horncastle next week, and as it would be tremendous news if LWT became interested in sponsoring 2012 or future Louth Peregrines, I consider that could only be a praiseworthy step....which no-one else in Louth has reported on as having taken to date. I would have thought such additional input would be welcomed rather than rebuffed. (NB. John Lusby is a Louth resident).

Further, were the rancorous comments referenced above directed at John Lusby, me or both of us ? Perhaps living in Lincoln as I do, it's considered that I shouldn't have raised the question of LOUTH Peregrines ? My post of 5th January merely asked for any update on a thread which had attracted c 400 views from interested members and therefore deserved more encouraging and positive input than some of that evidenced above.

Anyway, thank you, John L. and Geoff, for your positive and encouraging posts. :D :)

Hi Freddy, I've looked at the the church 4 times this week (desperate for a green year tick) and not seen any Peregrines and we know from Geoff's regular contributions that they seem to have voted with their feet for quite a few months and removed themselves elsewhere. The whole question of whether they might one day breed on the church has been a sensitive one and while no one doubts the goodwill of all Lincs birders in seeing the spread of Peregrines in our county we have to accept this has to be a softly softly process in this particular instance. In the absence of any birds now is not the time to make a big play and amend the strategy that has been developed and followed after a range of debate and input. Its frustrating there has been no success so far but lets have a little patience and make sure we don't shoot our bolt. The good news is that in 2010 the number of pairs of Peregrines in Lincs was into double figures and while they didn't all breed, the population is definitely expanding.

Just had it confirmed today, the member of clergy who is vociferously anti-peregrines, is being transferred to the West Midlands next week.

My latest information is that the tower is now closed to the public and the camera is installed ready for use, but not connected, just waiting until for the stars of the show to appear.
