I had a ringed Common Gull standing on the raft at Boultham mere this afternoon. It was sporting a metal ring and a white plastic ring with black letters.
Frustratingly it was too far away for me to read the ring through the scope and there was no way I could get nearer to the bird.
However I found that by holding my bins to the eyepiece of scope I could easily read the ring. Rather "Heath Robinson" and not 100% sharp but it did the job.
This method could be of use to other birders in a similar situation.

Your 'Heath Robinson' arrangement for reading rings reminds me of a trip my son Alex and I did to Norfolk last April.

We had located the reported flock of c.70 Waxwings feeding on Ivy berries on the UAE Sports Field at Colney. For record purposes Alex took a few photos of the birds through his i Phone pressed up against binoculars.( There must be an easier way of photographing birds ). Surprisingly, the Waxwings were clearly recognisable.
