It may be a 'scam', they may be expensive, inefficient and need repairing but they are OK in my books if I keep earning a crust from them :wink:

In my eyes the wind farm project is worthwhile. Here we all are talking about an energy derived from the earth, a good thing I am sure you'll agree. Whether wind farms are the right way to take energy from the earth I am not sure and I believe we are in the process of finding that out. We will never know until we feel.

I am sceptical about the statistic being used as a tool to be against wind power as to assess the World's percentage of power drawn from wind is unfair. I am sure that many parts of the World are using dirty methods wich would stack against our small amount of renewable efforts by wind. We should be more proud of the fact that we are making the effort to achieve cleaner energy against the majority of the World's reluctance. We should not champion the fact that other Countries use dirty power as a reason to dissuade our path to better and cleaner energy.

What the turbines are made of is not good (I did not know) but what things are made of can be changed.

Money has benn thrown around for many years and in the scheme of things, it is just money. The Common Ag Policy has taken a lot of money over the years - a scam??????. Council's and governments waste money so we can not look at the cost and be all rose tinted.

It may take a lot of effort to keep wind turbines going, again only money, but if this creates ways of deciding better methods to do things then it will be worth every penny.

We may look back, or our children may, and see that this pathway was foolish but this pathway may be an inspiration to a person to do better, to do bigger or to inspire the next generation to discovery what we all really want to happen. I am sure that every person who is in disagreement about wind farms will truly want a successful renewable energy to emerge. I am sure of that.

You walk down the street and see shop fronts and buildings lit up, you can see from space in an evening that we are really not doing what we could to preserve energy. There are many ways we can use less dirty energy but we don't, as a nation. Wind farming may be folly but it may be the green shoots of something worthwhile.

But don't put one near my house.

You'd think the author of this article, Matt Ridley would know a scam when he sees one. He was the chairman of Northern Rock in the years up to its collapse in 2007 and had to go to the government to ask for a £27 billion to bail him out. This event more than any other led the way to the financial collapse in 2008 and the recession we are currently in. From reading the article I would say that he knows a bit less about the UKs energy requirements and windpowers role in it than he does about keeping a bank from collapsing.

I didn't see anything in the article that actually referenced his claim that the government will do a u turn on windpower. Maybe there will be something in the budget. Possibly its a play to change policy now Chris Huhne is out of the picture. The UK cannot afford to mess about forever in deciding how to get our electricity. We are now committed to windpower to a certain degree, because there has been no investment in other sources like nuclear. Thats because the private sector won't touch it and it takes years to develop a power station. Thats great in my opinion. I personally think all power should be generated locally and everyone who wants electricity should be able to see as many turbines from their windows as it takes to power their homes.

I don't rule out the possibility that people who don't like wind turbines, if they can persuade their neighbours, should be able to have a small nuclear reactor in their kitchen, to meet their need for electricity to cheap to meter. I personally would object to this if any of my neighbours were to suggest it.

I fully endorse and support Phil's comments. Just a reflection - I hope those birders who are against turbines and use such evocative terms as "bird slicers" do their birding on foot! Motor vehicles have been and are responsible for far more avian deaths than turbines ever could be!

Vehicles are a necessity at times Bird Slicers are not, we need to wake up to the fact that they are useless

I know we need a solution to fossil fuels, but not wind turbines
